You Don't Build Brands. You Build Relationships.

I say this to my students at Howard University, and I'll say it here:

There is no such thing as "branding."

What you're actually doing — what every successful business, artist, entrepreneur, and leader is doing — is building relationships. The brand is what happens after. The brand is what people call the relationship when they're describing it to someone else.

Think about what actually creates trust with another person. It's not a logo. It's not a tagline. It's showing up. Consistently. Authentically. Over time.

You don't have to be the best. You don't have to be perfect. What you have to be is consistent — so that people understand what they're getting when they come to you, and they come to you for exactly that.

I learned this before I ever thought of it in business terms. In junior high school, I wrote a song for someone I cared about. When I saw the smile on her face, I realized I might have a superpower. Not to manipulate — but to connect. To add something. To make someone feel something real.

That's been the through-line of everything I've built since.

FLO — For the Love Of — is built on one foundational belief: you are not alone. I say it from the stage. I say it through the music, the candles, the wine, the conversations. When someone closes their eyes at one of my shows, drink in hand, fully present — what's happening for them is that they've found a space where they can exhale. Where the weight of the day falls away. Where they feel, for a moment, like someone is holding space for them.

That's a relationship. The brand is just what you call it.

Don Miguel Ruiz writes in The Four Agreements that no one can do better than their best — but when you consistently and authentically give your best, that is what creates the trust. When people start coming to you for that thing you give, that IS your brand.

So stop thinking about branding.

Start thinking about: who are you showing up for? What do they need? What do you consistently give that makes them feel less alone?

Build that. The rest follows.

I love you! I love you! I love you! Always do your FLO,

MJ
